In South Africa today the Department of Education is working towards integrated
education. Also known as Inclusive Learning where a physically disabled child
can be enrolled into a conventional school. It is important to prepare children
who may find it difficult to adjust to being with a disabled child in the classroom
or playground.
This is a new development where a CD song and Story book has been produced to
address this issue.
Volume 2:
In this edition the authors, Josephine Cànovas and Roy Harding, have introduced
a new character, Daniella, who is a deaf girl and is now attending the same school.
Through the introduction of this character, the authors have brought in a new
focus which is on people who are hard of hearing. They saw this as a great opportunity
to enhance children’s understanding of those around us who have impaired
hearing. Having done this, they have maintained all of the other characters, which
of course includes Peter. There is a lovely historical angle brought into the
story line, with a character like Shaka, the Zulu King, featured in the most unexpected
way.
